L’Arc Compilation CD Completed

I never officially mentioned it but I have completed a personal dream of mine with a long time friend; record a L’Arc~en~Ciel cover song between the two of us. When we met I was just getting into L’Arc and I didn’t even play drums. In fact, I didn’t play bass anymore either. It was this band that reignited the musical flame which led me to where I am today – nowhere! (laughs). In all seriousness, this is a major accomplishment for the both of us. Poel wasn’t a singer and I wasn’t playing drums everyday and now we’ve recorded the first U.S. compilation of L’Arc~en~Ciel covers.

The recording has been completed and it feels great to have it hitting the shelves just a few weeks after the upcoming show in the U.S. Look for the CD to be released in April on Cleopatra Records, iTunes, and all major outlets (Tower, HMV) in Japan. Listen for me on bass, drums, and of course all of the engineering.

Lots of recording going on right now. I’m doing two tracks for a L’Arc~en~Ciel tribute CD which will be released under Cleopatra Records. I’ll be playing bass and drums on “Lies and Truth” and Bass, Drums, and Vocals on “Be Destined”. Look for me with artists Poel and Gabriel on iTunes soon!

Out of the blue…

Someone called me up and asked me if I could play bass last weekend for a band I didn’t know, to play tunes I haven’t heard, in a style of music I don’t follow. I learned two things from this gig: its important to do gigs like this because if you don’t play a certain style or genre of music, it is very easy to forget, and how much my ear has changed since I’ve been around Bunny and Stanley. Right now, my two favorite tunes are “Temperamental” by Bunny/CAB and “After the Cosmic Rain” by Corea Clarke White (Stanley). If you had asked me this a few months ago I would have said something along the lines of “Be Destined” or even worse “Lies and Truth” by L’Arc~en~Ciel… How time flies! Here are a few snaps from the gig.

Jazz for “Casual Encounters”

My jazz band “777″ played the opening and closing nights of Casual Encounters : A Photo Exhibit at the grand opening of the “Canton Art and Jazz Club” in the downtown/Chinatown area in Los Angeles.

Good Night Noises @ Viper Room

This show marks my official “coming out” show with The Goodnight Noises. We played original tunes that featured brand new basslines by yours truly. We literally melted the faces off a few of our attendees. At one point Vos, the guitarist/singer grabbed a guys full glass of whiskey (which isn’t cheap @ the Viper) and started playing slide with it! Ice cubes were popping out all over the place. It was awesome. Aside from all of the stage antics we played a flawless show. We were so cool in fact that the hostess put her tray down to enjoy the show for a bit. For me, that was a first and validation that we’re going to kick some serious grass!

Stanley Clarke’s New Label : Roxboro Entertainment Group

Roxboro Entertainment Group is the music label of jazz bass legend Stanley Clarke, dedicated to the perpuation of the diversity of musical artistry.

Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way… The opening party was off the hook. Some of the greatest bassists the world has ever seen attended the party.

Christopher R. Coleman was on drums, Hadrien Feraud jammed on bass. Bunny Brunel and Stanley Clarke just partied all night long. It was really a great night. The energy was perfect. I had time to catch a glimpse of some of the new artists on Stanley’s label and they are all top notch artists. I’m elated that Stanley started the label and I’m looking forward to many years of great music coming out of this group.

New Bands for January 11′

As usual, I’m playing for new acts now. The latest additions are Black Party Politics, The Vinton Jazz Quintet (Drums), and The Goodnight Noises. I’ve added new shows. The Goodnight Noises came together over the past three days and we played an awesome set at the Central. BPP has been in the works since NAMM but I was too sick to jam. We’re playing this weekend. Also, CBS and GQ are back at the boogie den! Come check it out. Open Bar, yadda yadda yadda…
